Birendra Kumar Jha
My story began in Gobrahi, a small village near Janakpurdham, where I was born. Being born in low-income family, my schooling was completed from the village and then I moved to Janakpur to complete the Proficiency Certificate Level in Science (PCL-Science) from Ram Swarup Ramagar Multiple Campus (RRM, Janakpur). During two years of the PCL course, I rarely attended the class as there was the trend in Janakpur to get coaching for almost all the subjects, mostly Physics, Chemistry and Math for the science students. After completion of the Intermediate course, I moved to Kathmandu to get coaching for IOE entrance exam and went through the entrance exam. The entrance exams were conducted in the Pulchowk campus itself. I was astonished with the facilities of the campus e.g. labs, building blocks, chairs and tables for individual students and many more. Though the entrance exam didn’t go very well, I was dreaming that how lucky I could be if I could get the chance to study in the Pulchowk Campus. Finally, the wait was over and entrance exam result was published, I started searching my name from the bottom of the pass result and couldn’t find my name at higher marks and thought that I was unable to pass the entrance exam and finally decided to look at the results from the top marks in search of my friend’s name who had really cracked the exam. Then surprisingly, I saw my name in rank 37 from the top list which I could not believe. With a great sigh, I also checked my name under the pass list to confirm my roll number and it was there.Then, in the great environment of Pulchowk Campus, a wonderful friend circle and guidance from great respected teachers, I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Then after, I joined IOE, Western Region Campus, Pokhara as a Lecturer in Contract basis as a lecturer to impart knowledge to the Diploma students of Electrical Faculty. After one year, I got the chance to attend the M. Sc. (Power System Engineering) entrance exam in the Pulchowk as a first batch and successfully got enrolled for the course with full scholarship. I got the opportunity to study Master’s Degree with current Rt. Honorable Minister for Energy, Water Resources; Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Minister for Urban Development Mr. Kulman Ghising and former Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority Mr. Manoj Silwal. In due course of my Master’s study, I joined Nepal Telecom on permanent basis as a Telecom Engineer where I served in billing department nearly one and half year.Later, I joined Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in year 2004 AD as I was pursuing my Master’s Degree in Power System Engineering. While being in NEA, I got the opportunity to work in different directorates starting from Distribution and Consumer Services Directorate from where I learnt so many things starting from Bid Documents Preparation, Technical Specifications Review, Cost Estimate, Design Drawings Review, Consumer Services, No-Light, 33/11 kV Substation Details, Theft Control, TOD meter data download and Analysis and many more. Finally, I also got the opportunity to train the engineers and supervisors of the different regional offices (currently Provincial Offices) regarding data download of TOD meters and their analysis and a TOD meter data download and analysis book for different types of TOD meters were also published by me. Later I joined Generation Directorate, from where I was deputed to the Upper Trishuli 3A (UT3A) Hydro-Electric Project and got the opportunity to head Electro-mechanical and Transmission Line Divisions of the Project. Despite too many challenges in social, environmental, technical sectors and a great loss from huge earthquake of the Year 2015, the project was successfully synchronized to the grid in year 2019. Right now, the project has recovered investment along with the interest in capital and with the profit. Today, I can see the conductors hanging on the towers from my office at Matatirtha and feel proud as I was also a part of the Project.After completion of the UT3A Hydel Project, I had served as a project manager for the underground project of Lalitpur and Bhaktapur area with the aim to increase the reliability and quality of the electricity supply the limited feeders of Lagankhel, Pulchowk, Bhaktapur and Thimi distribution centers. Currently, I am heading a challenging project with the aim to construct 450 KM long 400kV transmission line which starts from New Butwal Substation and traverses through Nawalparasi West, Rupandehi, Palpa, Kapilvastu, Arghakhanchi, Dang, Salyan, Surkhet, Bardiya, Kailali, Dadeldhura and Kanchanpur Districts with the provision of 400 kV high voltage substations at Lamahi, Chhinchu, Daiji (Kanchanpur). The social and environmental study for the Project has been completed and is about to float the bid in few months for New Butwal-Lamahi 161 KM section. The main objective of the project is to evacuate the power generation from the power plants of the western side of Nepal, enhance reliability and quality of the supply in the western area of Nepal and to carry electricity trade in neighboring country.My growth has been firmly rooted in the learning experiences at IOE, both academic and beyond. I am deeply thankful to my friends and to our respected mentors and the Gurus, who molded me into what I am today.Happy Silver Jubilee to all our 2053 IOE, BELEX Mates!

कहाँबाट कहाँ आइयो, अनि के–के गरियो, धेरै छन् ती कुराहरू। मलाई ASCOL (Amrit Science College) मा पढ्नुपर्छ भन्ने ठूलो चाहना थियो। त्यसका लागि स्कुल पढ्दा Optional Math & English राम्रोसँग पढ्नुपर्छ भन्ने थियो। अरू विषयहरू त सायद मैले घर आएर कहिल्यै पढिन होला। २०४६–४७ सालतिर चिदीचौरमा, स्कुलको अगाडि, भाषण गर्ने एक जना विद्यार्थी नेता मन पर्थ्यो। अनि उनी ASCOL पढेका रहेछन्, सायद त्यसैको प्रभाव होला, मलाई पनि ASCOL जान मन लागेको।काठमाडौँ पनि आइयो। ASCOL मा त नाम निस्किएन, तर त्रिचन्द्र कलेजमा मुस्किलले भर्ना हुन पाएँ । Science का Teacher हरूले कहिले English मा कहिले नेपालीमा पढाउँदा रहेछन्, मलाई त निकै गाह्रो भयो र फेरि अर्को वर्ष दोहोर्याउनु पर्ने भयो। अर्को वर्ष ASCOL मा चान्स पाएँ र पुल्चोक Engineering कलेजको यात्राको बाटो खुल्यो।अहिले सम्झन्छु, म सायद १७ वा १८ वर्षको थिएँ। काठमाडौँमा डेरा खोज्नै मुस्किल, बा–आमा छोडेर एक्लै बस्नु पर्ने, आफैँ पकाएर खानुपर्ने, अझ त्यसमाथि त्यतिबेलाको पानीको समस्या। सामाखुसी बस्दा एक ग्यालन खाने पानी ल्याउन अरूको घरमा गएर ३–४ घण्टा कुर्नु पर्ने, अनि त्यसैले २–३ दिनलाई पुर्याउनु पर्ने। सीमित स्रोत, चञ्चल युवावस्था, अनि आफ्नै एकल व्यवस्थापनको दिनचर्या… बापत Doctor बन्ने सपना।एक–दुई महिना MBBS को preparation class गर्दा नै मलाई मेरो औकात के हो थाहा पाएँ। अनि त्यसपछि पुल्चोक क्याम्पसको लागि भनेर खोलिएको Entrance Preparation Center मा ठोक्किन पुगेँ। जहाँ फेरि उही स्वतन्त्र सरको Physics र पालक सरको Chemistry मा दिशा–दिक्षा पाइयो। तर यसपालि म भित्र निक्कै जागर थियो, Math मा निकै राम्रो preparation थियो, जसले गर्दा Pulchowk को Entrance Exam मा Top 9 भित्रै परेँ। Civil पढेर के हुन्छ भन्ने देखेको र सुनेकै चाहिँ थिएँ, Mechanical पढेर गाडी मर्मत गर्ने इच्छा त्यति थिएन। तर Electronics भन्ने जन्तु के हो, कस्तो हुन्छ, के हुन पाइन्छ—केही अत्तोपत्तो थिएन। कसै–कोही सल्लाह दिने मान्छे पनि थिएनन्। यसै एक नम्बरको रोजाइमा राखेको थिएँ।जब नाम निस्कियो, त्यसपछि त कत्तिनै ठूलो कुरा हात पारे जस्तो! जिल्ला भरी चिनिने, अब त देशलाई नै Electrify गर्छु जस्तो! अनि अलि बढी आत्मविश्वास, अलिकति पढाइमा लापरवाही भएछ। र त मुस्किलले पहिलो वर्ष exam पास गरेँ।ज्योति सरले पढाउनु भएको Binary Logic र Digital Electronics; दिपक सरको Microprocessor, रेग्मी सरको Digital Filter त मैले पछि बुझे, जब मैले WRC मा त्यही कुरा ३ वर्ष पढाएँ। दिनेश सरको Communication त मलाई मन पर्ने subject नै थियो। त्यही भएर त होला, म Nepal Telecom मा फ्याट्ट नाम निकाल्न सफल भएँ 2003 तिर। पुल्चोक पढ्दा त के मात्र गरिएन हो ! BELEX building को छतबाटै आन्दोलनको बेला ढुङ्गा उठाई सहभागि भईएन कि ! पाटन ढोका वरपरका कुनै होटल बाँकी छैनन् होला, हामी नपुगेको—जब exam सकिएको हुन्थ्यो। India tour लाई पैसा जम्मा गर्न musical concert—अनि त्यही concert को टिकट भिडाउन कहाँ पुगिएन र! उहिलेकै सभामुख, तर अहिलेका राष्ट्रपति कहाँ; सरकारी कार्यालय, व्यवसायी घरानासम्म सबै कहाँ।India tour गएका बेला हामी पाँच जना—दिपक, मिष्म, कमल, मनोज र म—शिर मुन्डन गरी, कालो चस्मा र छड्के क्याप लगाएर, ट्रेनमा आएका “हिजरा” सँग नाचिएन कि! होस्टेल बस्दा बरालको कोठामा प्रकाशलाई सर्वाङ्ग खुला हुने गरी नाचिएन कि! अन्त्यमा Graduation को पार्टी त छुटाउनै भएन नि—Basketball Court मा आयोजना भएको पार्टी। अनि नशालु निद्राले सिस्नोको घारीमा कटेको रातको मज्जा कसरी बिर्सनु हो ?यिनै उट्पट्याङ क्रियाकलाप र घटनाहरू त रहेछन्, २५ वर्षपछि पनि सम्झिरहने। यो भन्दा पनि अझ कत्तिःकति धेरै सम्झनाहरू छन्—गुरुहरूको, ती Campus का building हरूको, पाङ्ग्रे घर, निरौला दाइकोमा चाउचाउ खाएको, अनि मेसमा खाना खाँदा खसीको झोलमा चोक्टा पर्दा खुशी भएका क्षणहरू—जसले उर्जा दिइरहेको छ, यति टाढा अमेरिकामा १६–१७ वर्ष बसिरहँदा पनि।
कृष्ण प्रसाद भण्डारी (KP)
भन्छन् समयको गति हरेक व्यक्तिको लागि उसको परिस्थिति अनुसार फरक फरक हुन्छ । खुसीको समय छिटो सकिए जस्तो लाग्छ । त्यही समय अवधि दुःखमा परेकाको लागि लामो लाग्छ । स्कूलमा पढ्दा कहिले कलेज जान पाइएला जस्तो । कलेजमा कहिले पढाई सकिएर पैसा कमाउन पाइएला जस्तो । त्यसै गरी विवाह, बालबच्चा, पेशागत वृद्धि जस्ता कुराको प्रतिक्षा गर्दा गर्दै, एक पछि अर्को अभिलाषा कोट्याउँदा कोट्याउँदै, संघर्ष र उपलब्धीका पलहारु स्याहार्दा स्याहार्दै समय जांदो रहेछ । समय गएपछि भने तीता मिठा कुराको सारांश मात्र मानसपटलमा रहेर समय छिटो गयो जस्तो आभाष हुंदो रहेछ । सोही अनुसार विविध आरोह अवरोह र जीवनका भोगाई संगै पुल्चोक क्याम्पसबाट इन्जिनियरिंगमा स्नातक गरेर निस्केको पनि २५ वर्ष गैसकेछ ।यस बीचमा अनेकन राजनीतिक व्यवस्था, तीन राजा, तीन राष्ट्रपति, अनेकन सरकार र प्रधान मन्त्री, मोबाइल समेत बन्द गरेको कडा शासन, सशस्त्र द्वन्द, विनाशकारी भु-कम्प, १८ घण्टा सम्मको विजुली कटौति, अनगिन्ती हडताल र बन्द आदिको सामना गर्दै समय वित्यो, कहिले दिक्क भएर, कहिले आशावादी भएर, कहिले निराश र थकित भएर । तर जसरी पनि समय बित्दो रहेछ, बित्यो ।काठमाडौंको कांठमा जन्मिएको मेरो शिक्षा गोकर्णेश्वर मन्दिर नजिकको सरकारी स्कूलमै भयो र अमृत साइन्स कलेजबाट आइएस्सी सकियो । कता कता इलेक्ट्रोनिक्स पढ्नुपर्छ भन्ने दिमागमा छिरेछ र संयोगबस पुल्चोक क्याम्पसमा त्यो प्रोग्राम शुरु हुन लागेको रहेछ । एक वर्ष बिएस्सी पढ्दै कुरेरै भएपनि प्रवेश परीक्षा दिएं । नाम निस्किने अपेक्षा थिएन । तर क-कस्को निस्किएछ भनेर हेर्न गएको त १८ नम्बरमा आफ्नो पनि नाम छ ! त्यही दिन नै भर्नाको अन्तिम दिन रहेछ । भर्ना नभए वैकल्पिकले पड्काउने ! आफूले छानेको विषय भएकोले छोड्ने त प्रश्नै भएन । तर न गोजिमा पैसा थियो न कागज पत्र । त्यो समयमा न मोबाइल थियो न यातायातको आफ्नो साधन । भाग्यवस बुबाको कार्यालय त्यति टाढा थिएन । हतार हतार गएर बोलाएर ल्याई भर्ना शाखामा कुरा गर्न लगाएपछि भर्ना भएं । ठूलो कलेज परिसर, प्रशस्त खुल्ला ठाउँहरु, बंगैचा, चौर, परिसर भित्रै कालो पत्रे सडक, ठूला ठूला रुखहरु आदिको कारण पुल्चोक क्याम्पसमा शुरुमा जाँदा त अर्कै संसारमा पुगेजस्तो पनि अनुभव भयो ।कहिले पढाई, कहिले ल्याब, कहिले भवन वाहिरको बगैचामा इंटले भनेका बेन्चका रमाईला गफ, पिकनिक, टूर आदिमा अनेकन रमाईला पलहरु विते । हेर्दा हेर्दै ४ वर्षपछि २०५५ सालमा पढाई सकियो । केहि साथिहरु पढाइकै क्रममा ‘एनटिसिमा जागिर खानुपर्छ बुझिस्’ भन्थे । जागिरतिरै मन गयो । त्यो पनि एनटिसि अर्थात त्यतिवेलाको दूरसञ्चार संस्थान र हालको नेपाल टेलिकममा । व्यापार, उद्यम, व्यवसाय सायद आफ्नो नियतिमा थिएन । २०५६ सालमा दूरसञ्चार प्रवेश गर्नुअघि १ वर्ष जति एकजना गुरुको कम्पनीमा सिकारु काम पनि भयो । त्यो समय पनि सिकाई, अनुभव र कामको विविधताको कारण साह्रै फलदायी रह्यो ।जागिर शुरु भएपछि विभिन्न शाखा, विभाग, क्षेत्र त हुने नै भयो । तथापि सूचना प्रविधि शाखामा अधिकांश समय बित्यो र त्यो पनि काठमाडौ उपत्यका भित्रै वाहिर खास बस्नु परेन ।१-२ वर्ष जागिर हुँदा नहुँदै साथिहरु फटाफट विदेश जान थाले । त्यतिवेला अमेरिकाको विशेष क्रेज थियो । कक्षाका अधिकांश साथिहरु क्रमशः विदेशिए । अमेरिकाको एउटा कलेजको I-20 अझै पनि सुरक्षित छ । तर विदेश जाने जांगर चलेन । त्यसपछि विवाह, वालबच्चा, जागिर आदि स्वाभाविक वृत्तिमै जीवन अघि बढ्यो । हाल पहिलो छोरा इन्जिनियरिंग नै गर्दैछ र सानो ८ कक्षामा ।सार्वजनिक संस्थामा काम गर्दाका तीता मिठा दुबै पक्ष छन् । तथापि नेपाल टेलिकम सार्वजनिक संस्था पनि र प्रतिस्पर्धी वजारमा व्यापार गर्नुपर्ने व्यावसायिक संस्था पनि भएकोले यसले विशेष खालको परिस्थितिमा आफ्नो गतिविधि सञ्चालन गर्नुपर्ने हुन्छ । पारदर्शिता कायम गर्नुपर्ने, उच्च मुनाफा हासिल पनि गर्नुपर्ने र सामाजिक दायित्व पनि निर्वाह गर्नुपर्ने, राजनीतिक प्रचारवाजीको हतियार पनि बन्नु पर्ने र आधुनिक पेशागत संस्थाको क्षमता पनि देखाउनु पर्ने, प्राविधिक विकासको कारण छिटो छिटो उच्च लगानी पनि गर्नुपर्ने र परम्परागत राजस्वको श्रोतहरु पनि सांघुरिंदै जाने आदि अनेकन चुनौतिहरुका बीच काम गर्दै संस्थाको व्यवस्थापनको सदस्य हुने हैसियत सम्म आइपुग्दा स्वाभाविक रुपले धेरै अनुभव हरु जम्मा भएका छन् ।यस बीच पुल्चोक क्याम्पस संगको सम्बन्ध पनि टुटेको छैन । सन् २००३ देखि २००६ सम्म स्नातकोत्तरको पढाइ पनि त्यहिं नै सकियो । त्यसको अलावा केही समय आंशिक शिक्षकको रुपमा पनि योगदान दिने अवसर मिल्यो र समय समयमा नयां विद्यार्थिहरुको प्रोजेक्ट, थेसिस आदिको वाह्य मूल्यांकनकर्ताको रुपमा पनि कलेजले कामको अवसर दिंदै आएकोले पनि कलेजसंगको सम्बन्ध र त्यसबाट प्राप्त हुने उर्जाले निरन्तरता पएको छ ।काम गराई, कमाई, पढाई आदि जति भए पनि, परिवार जस्तो भए पनि र सामाजिक रुपमा जति सफल वा असफल भए पनि २-४ जना मात्रै पनि त्यति वेलाका साथि संगाती भेला भएर गन्थन गर्दा, सुख-दुखका कुरा गर्दा र हो-हल्ला गरी खुइलिएको तालु, चाउरिन थालेको गाला, निरन्तर दुख्ने जोर्नीहरु र खल्लो हुँदै गएको खानपानलाई थाति राखेर आफ्नो तन्नेरी अवस्थालाई पुनर्जीवित गर्दाको आनन्द भने अन्यत्र कतै प्राप्त नहुने रहेछ ।</br>
